Cretaceous and Palaeogene Palaeoenvironments of the Isle of Wight, UK
The Isle of Wight provides spectacular coastal exposures of Early Cretaceous through to Oligocene sediments which have been important in the development of our understanding of palaeontology, palaeoecology and stratigraphic concepts, and continue to furnish new data. Geology visited in the trip will include:
1) the floodplain environments of the Wealden facies (Barremian), famous for its diverse vertebrate faunas; Dr Sweetman will provide a synopsis of his recent exciting discoveries of smaller vertebrate faunas.
2) Marine Cretaceous (Aptian-Campanian) facies, including excellent outcrops of greensand and chalk facies. The cliffs of the Island provide some of the best exposures of Cretaceous Chalk anywhere in the world
3) Marine, estuarine and continental facies of the Palaeogene.
There will be ample time to collect material, examine details of exposures and enjoy the seaside on which we will be working.
