7. Origin, evolution and phylogeny of the Brachiopoda

There are some 5000 genera of brachiopods and for a substantial part of geological time they dominated the benthos. During the last few years some consensus on a broad frame classification of the phylum has emerged, and much new and sometimes controversial data on the phylumÕs origin together with its diversifications and extinctions through deep time have been published. The current state of play of these topics will be presented together with future perspectives.
