22. Mechanisms that guide evolutionary change for vertebrate dentitions: co-option of ancient patterns

The origin and evolution of vertebrate teeth remain controversial subjects, and this symposium will focus on the following topics, all interrelated to some degree:

1. dentition evolution from external scales or internal dermal elements;
2. evolutionary origins of teeth in the jawed vertebrates;
3. evolution of dentitions in the major jawed vertebrate groups.

Evidence from both molecules and morphology is relevant to these ongoing questions and will be examined in this symposium.
