IGCP572 is concerned with improving our knowledge and understanding of marine ecosystem recovery after the end-Permian extinction event. Not only was this the most severe trauma to have affected marine ecosystems, but it occurred during a time of global warming and many of the associated environmental changes that apparently controlled ecosystem recovery are predicted to occur in the near future. Understanding how marine ecosystems recovered from near-total collapse during the Permian-Triassic interval should help frame predictions of what will happen in the near future. Topics to be covered include reviews of past fieldtrips and workshops, and discussions of future plans and key results. IGCP572 runs from 2008-2012, so this is a key mid-term meeting.
